Grass Valley was once the richest gold mining town in California, and it wears that history well: a compact Victorian downtown, deep Cornish roots, and a year-round calendar of small-town festivals. Staying at Grass Valley RV Resort puts all of it about three miles from your site — close enough to pop downtown for dinner, far enough to fall asleep under the pines.

Things to Do in Grass Valley

Empire Mine State Historic Park

One of the oldest, deepest, and richest gold mines in California — 367 miles of underground passages that produced 5.8 million ounces of gold before closing in 1956. Walk the mine yard, peer down the lit main shaft, tour the stone Bourn Cottage and its formal gardens, and hike the park's forested trail network. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails.

Historic Mill & Main Streets

Downtown's Gold Rush–era storefronts hold restaurants, coffee houses, tasting rooms, bookshops, and boutiques, anchored by the restored art-deco Del Oro Theatre. Part of Mill Street is a pedestrian plaza, so you can browse with a coffee in hand. Street parking is easy compared to most California downtowns.

North Star Mining Museum

Just 0.8 miles from the resort down Auburn Road, with sidewalks the entire distance. This volunteer-run museum in the former North Star Mine powerhouse displays a 30-foot Pelton wheel, stamp mills, and mining equipment that explain how hard-rock gold mining actually worked. North Star House is another easy walk, 0.7 miles down Auburn Road.

The Center for the Arts

Grass Valley's performing-arts hub on West Main Street hosts national touring musicians, comedy, dance, and community theater in an intimate room. Check the calendar when you book — shows here sell out, and the venue is minutes from the resort.

Cornish Heritage & Pasties

Cornish miners brought their know-how — and their food — to Grass Valley in the 1850s, and the town still celebrates it. Try a traditional pasty from a downtown bakery, and if you visit in late November or December, Cornish Christmas closes Mill Street for evening street fairs with carolers and roasted chestnuts.

Gold Country Wine Tasting

Tasting rooms downtown pour Sierra-foothill zinfandel, barbera, and rhône-style blends from Nevada County vineyards, and several family-owned wineries within a short drive offer weekend tastings. It's a low-key, no-reservation wine scene — the opposite of Napa crowds.

Condon Park

An 80-acre city park in the pines with walking trails, a disc golf course, picnic areas, and a playground — a handy leg-stretch stop for kids and dogs between downtown outings.

When to Visit

Summer brings the Thursday-night street markets and warm evenings made for patio dining; it's also peak season for pairing a downtown day with a Yuba River swim. Fall is harvest time in the tasting rooms and the foothill color is at its best. Winter is quieter but charming — Cornish Christmas fills the streets on select December evenings, and Grass Valley sits low enough that heavy snow is rare. Spring means wildflowers on the Empire Mine trails before the heat arrives.

Why Stay at Grass Valley RV Resort

The resort sits about three miles south of downtown on Auburn Road — roughly a five-minute drive, with easy access back to Highway 49. That means you can do downtown mornings, return to the resort for an afternoon at the heated pool and spa, and head back in for dinner without ever fighting for parking. All 148 sites are fully paved with full hookups, so even a quick overnight stop on your way up Highway 49 is effortless.

Grass Valley also makes a practical home base: full grocery stores, hardware stores, pharmacies, and medical services are all within ten minutes of the resort — worth knowing if you're settling in for a longer stay.
