Add a little friendly competition to your stay at Grass Valley RV Resort. Our horseshoe pit is the perfect spot to gather with friends, family, or fellow travelers for a classic game outdoors.

Set in a relaxed corner of the resort, it's a fun way to enjoy the fresh air and unwind between Gold Country adventures. Whether you're a seasoned pitcher chasing ringers or just tossing for fun, the horseshoe pit is always ready for a good time.

At Grass Valley RV Resort, we make sure there's more to do than just relax — though with the heated pool, spa, and fireside lounges, you can do plenty of that too.

How to Play Horseshoes

Two stakes stand 40 feet apart; players (or teams of two) take turns pitching two horseshoes each at the far stake. Stand beside your stake, keep one foot behind it as you release, and aim for a smooth underhand swing — accuracy beats power every time.

Scoring: a ringer (shoe fully encircling the stake) is worth 3 points, and the closest shoe within six inches of the stake scores 1. In 'cancellation' scoring, matching ringers cancel each other out. Play to 21 points, or set a round limit for casual games — 40 shoes per player is a common backyard format.

Etiquette and safety: never walk to the pit while someone is pitching, wait until both players have thrown before scoring, and let kids move closer to the stake — the official distance is a suggestion when the goal is fun.

A Campground Classic

There's a reason horseshoes has survived every camping trend for a century: it's simple, social, and satisfying. Forty feet, two stakes, four shoes — and that unmistakable clang of a ringer echoing through the pines. Sets are available at the front desk, so a game is never more than a five-minute setup away.

The pit sits in a relaxed spot where games tend to draw a small crowd of lawn-chair spectators. Bring a cold drink from The Market and make an evening of it.

Game Day, Resort Style

Combine horseshoes with bocce, cornhole, and pickleball for a full outdoor tournament day — a favorite formula for rally groups and family reunions. The pool and spa are waiting when your pitching arm gives out.
