Malakoff Diggins is the Gold Country sight nobody expects: a mile-long amphitheater of eroded golden cliffs — part painted desert, part Bryce Canyon in miniature — carved not by nature but by the most powerful water cannons of the 19th century. This was the largest hydraulic gold mine in the world, and the environmental disaster it caused downstream led to America's first major environmental court ruling in 1884.
Today it's a quiet state historic park about fifty minutes from Grass Valley RV Resort, up scenic ridge roads past the San Juan Ridge. The drive itself is lovely, and because the park is genuinely remote, you'll often share the whole canyon with only a handful of visitors — a striking contrast to busier Sierra parks.
Alongside the diggins sits North Bloomfield, a preserved ghost town of white clapboard buildings — general store, saloon, church, and drugstore — frozen at about 1880. Rangers open several buildings in summer, and the effect of walking the silent main street is memorably eerie.
What to See & Do
Start at the museum in North Bloomfield for the story: how 'monitors' — giant water cannons — blasted entire hillsides into sludge to sluice out gold, washing so much debris into the Yuba River that Sacramento flooded and farmers sued. The Diggins Loop Trail then takes you down among the cliffs, past rusting monitors and the milky-blue pond at the pit floor. The full loop runs about three miles of easy walking.
Hiller Tunnel, a drainage tunnel you can walk through with a flashlight when conditions allow, is a favorite with kids. Photographers should aim for late afternoon, when low light sets the cliff bands of orange, white, and rust glowing.
Planning Your Trip
Combine Malakoff with the South Yuba: the route passes near Edwards Crossing and the swimming holes of the upper river, so summer visitors can hike the diggins in the morning and swim on the way home. In town, Nevada City makes a natural dinner stop on the drive back to the resort.
Bring water, snacks, and a full tank — there are no services past Nevada City, and cell coverage fades on the ridge. The final miles of North Bloomfield Road are well-graded dirt, easily managed in any passenger vehicle but not something you'd want to do in your motorhome. That's what makes the resort such a good base camp: leave the rig hooked up and take the toad.
